What actually changed in the CS2 transition.

CS2 launched September 27, 2023 as a free auto-update for CS:GO owners. CS:GO retired the same day. Twelve major changes, six minor ones — and a long list of things that stayed identical. Below: side-by-side comparison + what this means for muscle memory transfer.

What stayed exactly the same

Your muscle memory transfers.

  • Movement model

    Counter-strafing, strafe-jumping, weapon-speed mechanics — identical to CS:GO.

  • Weapon stats

    AK damage, M4 RPM, AWP one-shot — all unchanged. Same accuracy / spray patterns.

  • Economy rules

    Round wins / losses, kill rewards, plant bonus, all identical.

  • Skin inventory

    Every CS:GO skin transferred 1:1. Inspect links, float values, all preserved.

  • Game modes

    Competitive (now Premier + Wingman), Casual, Deathmatch, Arms Race, Demolition.

  • Steam integration

    Workshop, Friends, Group servers, Steam Inventory all work.

What this means for you

Aim & movement

Untouched. The same counter-strafing, the same spray patterns, the same A/B/C-tap timings. Your CS:GO mechanical skill transfers 100%.

Util play

Re-learn smokes. Volumetric behavior changes when smokes clear, where bullets carve, how molotovs interact. CS:GO smoke spots still mostly land — but the post-throw use is different.

Audio

Re-enable HRTF. CS2 launched without it; restored in 2024. Your CS:GO audio map (where footsteps come from) transfers, but the spatial precision is back.
